1884

An old heirloom with great flavor. Very large dark pink beefsteaks usually around a pound but can get up to 2. Fruits can be somewhat ribbed on top and have tender skin so may show some cracking or weather checking on the shoulder. With wonderful good old fashioned flavor, it is a favorite of many. Respectable production.

Story:

According to the story handed down, a tomato plant was found by James Lyde Williamson near Friendly, WV in a pile of flood debris after the great flood of 1884 of the Ohio River. I know tomatoes are tough, but wow!

For you history buffs, here is a link to a fascinating book written in 1884 about the flood, and here is one to a newspaper article.
