Aunt Ginny's Purple

Wonderful old heirloom beefsteak tomato with large, 8-16 oz fruit that are dark pink in color. Flavor is excellent, sweet and rich. Many compare it favorably to Brandywine. Fruit are smooth with very little cracking. They also are nice and juicy. Plants are vigorous and very productive. It handles heat very well. A favorite of many.

From Tatiana’s TOMATObase:

A family heirloom from Germany. First introduced in the SSE 1991 Yearbook by Rick Burkhart of Indianapolis, Indiana (IN BU R). Burkhart's family has raised it for over 25 years, since the late 1960s.

Rick Burkhart listed this variety for only one year in the SSE Yearbook, and if it weren't for Bill Minkey, who scanned Yearbooks closely for newly listed varieties and reoffered seeds, this wonderful variety wouldn't have been well known today. Rick indicated that this variety was originally from Germany, and original name was unknown.
