Black Bear

One of the earlier maturing dark tomatoes that came to us from Belarus (Russia). It is a very pretty fruit, pinky black in color, some with green shoulders. The flavor is really very good and it is a nice large size – usually 8-14 oz. Production can be very good.

Story:

First introduced in U.S. in the SSE 2008 Yearbook by Neil Lockhart of Oblong, Illinois (IL LO N), who obtained seeds from Reinhard Kraft, Neukirchen, Germany.

Reinhard received seeds from Andrey Baranovski of Minsk, Belarus with a translated name that could be interpreted by some as racially discriminatory. As it appeared to be a great tomato, Mr. Kraft chose a nice neutral name for it - 'Black Bear' - and shared seeds under this new name.
