Russian heirloom which was made available by Marina Danilenko, a Moscow seedswoman. This tomato was named after Paul Robeson, an African-American singer and actor and a political activist for the Civil Rights Movement. Because of his affiliation with Communism and anti-US beliefs, Paul Robeson was very popular with the Communist government in the former Soviet Union during the Cold War.
