Story:
Italy has many pear shaped tomatoes and identifies them by the area they are grown. This one grows in the area near Gran Sasso – a mountain in the Abruzzo region of central Italy.
This is a great old Italian tomato wonderful for making a meaty tomato sauce. This is not the little cherry pear shaped tomato but rather a large, 6-12 oz., plump red pear shaped tomato with vertical ribs. The fruit are meaty and it is a pleasure to hold the bottom heavy ribbed tomatoes in your hand.
The fruit taste good even when fresh but is usually used as a cooking tomato – great for roasting, juice making, salsa, or sauce. Production is good on vigorous plants, even in heat and right up until the end of the season.
