Rutgers

This variety will bring you 6-8 oz. fruit with heavy yield, good flavor, and good shelf life. A good canning tomato, it’s been popular with home and market gardeners for many years.

Story:

From Tatiana’s TOMATObase:

Developed at the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, from a cross between Marglobe and J.T.D. (an old New Jersey variety from the Campbell Soup Co.). It was first released in 1928 and then again in 1943 (as Rutgers Improved). The 1928 release was indeterminate, and the 1943 release is basically what we have today.

My seed source is Fedco Seeds: “When Rutgers University “refined” the variety in 1943, they took out some of the vininess but also some of the flavor. Our taste tests confirmed that the original indeterminate strain is better, so that’s the strain we offer of this famous New Jersey tomato, developed by Campbell’s Soup Co. in 1928 as a cross between Marglobe and JTD. “
